Start with hyphae width and septation. Mucorales are broad, ribbon-like, pauci-septate molds. Rhizopus adds rhizoids near sporangiophores; culture work should follow mold safety SOPs.
Look for a round sporangium at the tip of a sporangiophore. Rhizopus classically has rhizoids at the base of the sporangiophore.
KOH or tissue may show broad, folded, pauci-septate hyphae with irregular right-angle branching. Do not overcall from one broken fragment.
